LEAD: Leadership as a Job of a Manager

Distance training course on leadership in a company. Independent course or a part of professional Certificate in Management

course is the basis for a successful manager and leader. After all, the keys to success are always inside: a clear focus on the essence of the manager of its role in the company without the distraction of the fact that it is not the work of internal strength and energy leadership in the change, as well as the wisdom and flexibility with respect to their team. The course consists of 5 interrelated themes.

Here's competence to help you become a successful manager: (1) understanding management priorities and REALLY following them, (2) leadership competencies and how to empower them with influence, (3) working with a team, (4) leading through changes, and (5) personal effectiveness - stress-management and time-management.

This course is one of the three components of the program "Professional Certificate in Management", or it can be taken as an independent course. To receive Professional Certificate in Management, issued by the U.S. licensed training center, you take three courses -- SPM-System of professional management in a company, HRM-Art of managing people, LEAD - Leadership as a job of a manager -- and complete a final project. Duration: 5 weeks

Topics of the course

In addition to already known techniques, this course uses the methodology and knowledge, that are not yet available in Russian publications, but have already shown efficiency in the U.S. and European markets.

LEAD-1. What do managers actually do?

A Manager is a profession that has its own components, logic, and rules of the game. Have you ever worked "under the" incompetent boss? So do I. Your employees deserve something different.

After studying this topic you will develop a "job description" and the profile of a successful manager. You will create a matrix of competencies for managers of your company. You will identify problem areas and areas of likely unhealthy competition in the team of your managers. You will determine your own competences as a manager and areas for improvement.
This topic is available as a trial course.

LEAD-2. Leadership, power and influence in organization.

You are younger than the majority of employees in your department, and you have been working here recently. Nevertheless, you got a promotion to the position of head of a large department, which covers three product groups at the company. You are good at one of these products, and you are only to grasp all the subtleties in the other two. You feel that a number of staff are trying to ignore you or talk to you down. Other people support you. You need to develop your own style of leadership to become capable to stand for your own ideas.

As a result of studying this topic, you'll learn how to strengthen your position in organization and you will start feeling a little bit more independent; you will also outline the steps for your own approval as a leader.

LEAD-3. Managing an effective team

You can achieve your goals only if there are people who support your ideas and are ready to work hard to pursue these goals. This is your team. You can be one of the members of the team, an immediate supervisor of this team, or you can delegate the direct guidance of another person, watching from the sidelines as the team achieves. The most important is that everybody works together with a clear focus and strong efforts. Is it always so? What should you do to assure that the group you manage is a team and this team is moving in the right direction?

As a result of this topic, you will be develop an action plan for the selection, development, and management of your team following set goals and objectives.

LEAD-4. Implementing desired changes

You have so many ideas for improving the work of your organization, and you sincerely want them to endorse them. You simply want the organization to work better. And you don’t understand why other managers, and sometimes your own tam members do not understand or accept that obvious. How do “sell” them your ideas? How to make them allies? How to implement the changes after that?

You will prepare an implementation plan for one of your change ideas in a company; during this process you will realize what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong in your time and energy management. You will list the personal changes that are necessary to make in managing your own efficiency. Also, you will prepare yourself for people's reactions to your idea, and you will know what to do with their reaction. You will develop an action plan for the stages of preparation, implementation and completion of changes.

LEAD-5. Personal effectiveness of a manager: Time-management and Stress-management.

You put down all the tasks that you have to do next week, and realize that even if you do not sleep, communicate with his family, or read; you still do not have enough time to implement all. This awareness begins to squeeze your mind. Pressing increases when you think how important many things on your list are for you or for other people.

As a result of studying this course, you'll find what you are doing right and what your are doing wrong in managing your time and energy. You will list personal changes that are necessary to make in managing your own efficiency.

During training, you will apply the knowledge to your work and your company; at the end of each topic, you write a research paper. Your tutor will give you feedback on your work.

Training process

Learning through Implication - is the main principle of learning in L2G

Design of learning process is built on a simple but effective scheme:

  1. Start with challenges and problems faced by every manager
  2. Provide means to solve them
  3. Apply solutions in your company.

All materials subject to a single idea, "What you need to know as the manager to solve this or that practical task". You get to know each of these topics by learning the problems that practicing managers face every day.

The learning process is based on solving business situations and instantaneous application of knowledge to real-life situations happening in a company. 95% of our students conduct the consulting project for their own business - developing and improving management of the department, division or company that they manage.

During the training, you apply the knowledge to your job. At the end of each topic, you will write a 2-page paper to correct the shortcomings in management by using the world-tested knowledge gained in video-lectures of Dr. Julia Ivy. Your tutor gives feedback on your work.
